Golf Picked to Tie for Second in GNAC
Sept. 8, 2010
NASHUA, NH- The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's golf team has been picked to finish in a tie for second place in the second annual Great Northeast Athletic Conference pre-season poll.
The Corsairs received 25 votes in the annual poll of head coaches, tying Rhode Island College. Both UMD and the Anchormen finished three votes behind defending champion Johnson & Wales. JWU has won the conference championship in each of the last three seasons and finished 37th at the NCAA Division III Championships last spring.
"I think JWU is worthy of the top spot," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Joel Baptista. "They are the three- time defending conference champions. They are on top of the mountain and until someone knocks them off, it's justified."
UMass Dartmouth is coming off a third place finish at the GNAC Championships last fall. "Our goal each fall is winning the GNACs, and qualifying for the NCAAs," said Baptista. "It's the brass ring we reach for at the end of the season."
Junior captain Nick Jagoe (Westport, MA/Westport HS) leads the returning players. "We will return some experience this season, and, hopefully, add some missing pieces that will put us in a good position to make a run at the championships," said Baptista.
The Corsairs will open their 2010-11 schedule at the Duke Nelson Invitational at Middlebury a week from Saturday.
