NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-After accomplishing something they hadn't done in 33 years last season, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's golf team hopes to make it two NCAA Division III Championships appearances in a row when they begin their fall 2011 season this weekend. The Corsairs will begin their schedule at Middlebury's Duke Nelson Invitational, playing Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning.
The Corsairs return three of the five student-athletes who represented UMass Dartmouth at the NCAAs last year, with senior captain Nick Jagoe (Westport, MA/Westport HS) joining senior George Gillmore (Cotuit, MA/Barnstable HS/Fairfield) and junior Matt Connolly (Lynnfield, MA/Lynnfield HS) as Corsairs with NCAA experience.
"(Senior) Scott Woodacre (Westborough, MA/Westborough HS) graduated, but we return three great players in our captain, Nick Jagoe, Matt Connolly, who had an outstanding season last year, and George Gillmore, who really came on strong towards the end of the year," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Joel Baptista. "We're looking for a couple of returning players to fill the void. (Junior) John Coucci (Mattapoisett, MA/Old Rochester Regional HS) had a good summer and played well in the fall, and (sophomore) Brendan Kelleher (Hopedale, MA/Hopedale HS) finished last season well and had a nice summer," said Baptista."We also have Max Omer, a freshman from Longmeadow (Longmeadow HS) who had a good high school career and can step in and help us. (Junior) Kevin Rewinski (West Springfield, MA/West Springfield HS) is also returning, and we have Todd Souza, who is an incoming freshman (Fall River, MA/Diman Vo Tech Regional HS), and (senior) Matt Baird (Stoughton, MA/Coyle & Cassidy/HS/WPI), who is a transfer, and all of them will be vying for playing time."
The Corsairs hope to get off to a fast start. "We expect to be very competitive, with people pushing each other for playing time," said Baptista. "John (Coucci) and Max (Omer) will be playing this weekend, and we'll be going with the hot hand until we see a base of consistency. We're going to need solid play from Nick, Matt and George, they're tournament-tested. We have to work on our game which leads up to our ultimate goal of defending our conference championship."
