PLYMOUTH, NH -Host Plymouth State goals late in the second and third periods and Jack Astedt made 24 saves as the Panthers defeated the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team, 2-0, in a Massachusetts Collegiate Athletic Conference game at Hanaway Rink Saturday evening.
After a scoreless first period, Kyle Greco of the Panthers broke the tie, scoring on an odd man rush at 18:38 of the second period to give Plymouth State a 1-0 lead. Mike Freitag and Zach Sarig drew the assists.
The Corsairs pressed for the equalizer in the third period, but Astedt held them off. UMD pulled junior goaltender Ryan Williams(Milton, ON/ Huntsville Otters-OPJHL) for an extra attacker in the final minute, but PSU's Matt Aponte took a pass from Richie Zobak and scored into an empty net to seal the verdict with 47 seconds to play.
"They were a little quicker to the puck, and they played a little better than we did," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. "We had a few glorious chances on a power play midway through the third period. We're still in good position to host a first round playoff game. Now we'll get ready for our final regular season game against Framingham State next Tuesday, and then get ready for the playoffs."
UMass Dartmouth outshot Plymouth State, 24-19. Williams made 17 saves for the Corsairs, who were blanked on three power play opportunities and held PSU scoreless on all three of their attempts.
UMass Dartmouth dropped to 14-8-2 and 9-6-2 in the MASCAC with the defeat, while Plymouth State improved to 15-6-2 and 12-3-2 in MASCAC play with the victory. UMD will return to action when they host Framingham State in the final game of the regular season Tuesday evening.
