Hockey Battles to Tie with Worcester State

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA –The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team tied visiting Worcester State 1-1, in a Massachusetts Collegiate Athletic Conference game at the Stephan Hetland Memorial Ice Arena Tuesday evening.

After a scoreless opening period, the Lancers took advantage of a power play just 35 seconds in the middle frame.  Worcester State sophomore defenseman Cody Osburn (Sacramento, CA/Fresno Monsters-WSHL) scored assisted by sophomore Stephen Rock (Tulsa, OK/Idaho Jr Steelheads-WSHL) and junior Derek Serborn (Crown Point, IN/Tulsa Rampage-WSHL).

The Corsairs would tie it 1-1 just a tick over three minutes later.  Senior Phil Bronner (Wilbraham, MA/Springfield Jr Falcons-EJHL) put the puck past Lancers freshman goalie Salvatore Tecci (Franklin, MA/Long Beach Bombers-WSHL). Senior forward Dave McDonald (Wakefield, MA/Valley Jr Warriors) and senior defenseman Zach Hepler (Sarver, PA/Dixie Beehives-OPJHL) picked up assists.

The teams played an even third period and the Lancers had a chance in overtime. going on the power play at 2:34, but the Corsairs did a nice job killing the penalty and preserving the tie.

"This game mirrors what the last five weeks have been, back and forth and up and down hockey," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. "If you like kissing your sister, you got yourself a tie.  Our inability to take advantage of the power play has been the story of the season. We did a good job killing off a double minor to end the second and start the third.  Williams was very good in net, in fact both goaltenders played very well."

The Corsairs outshot the Lancers, 27-23. Corsair senior goalie Ryan Williams (Milton, ON/Huntsville Potters-OPJHL) made 21 saves for UMD, while Tecci made 26 saves for Worcester State.

UMass Dartmouth went to 7-7-5 and 5-3-4 in the MASCAC, while Worcester State went to 6-11-2 and 3-8-2 in the MASCAC. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Salem State next Thursday. The Lancers will host Westfield State Saturday.
