Big Third Period Leads Hockey Over Fitchburg State, 7-4
NEW BEDFORD, MA – Freshman forward Swann Boisvert (Blainville, QC/Pembroke Lumber Kings-CHL) scored three goals and added an assist to lead the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team past visiting Fitchburg State, 7-4, in a Massachusetts Collegiate Athletic Conference game at the Stephan Hetland Memorial Ice Arena Thursday evening.
Boisvert scored his third goal as the first of three on a nearly seven-minute power play in the third period that saw the Corsairs score three times and increase their lead to 7-3. Freshman forward Kevin Holmes (Newburyport, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors-EJHL) of the Falcons was given a two minute tripping penalty, a five minute penalty for hitting from behind and a game misconduct at 5:24 of the third period, and UMD had a man advantage for six minutes and 20 seconds after a penalty to freshman defenseman John Sartell (Wakefield, MA/Brighton Academy) expired.
Prior to the penalty, senior forward Dave McDonald (Wakefield, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors-EJHL) had given UMD a 4-3 lead 13 seconds into the third period when he scored on a wrist shot. The Corsairs, who trailed, 3-1, with five minutes left in the second period, scored six consecutive goals to break the game open just after the midway point of the third period.
Boisvert scored twice late in the second period to create a 3-3 tie. He converted a pass from sophomore forward Dmitry Antipin (Novosibirsk, Russia/Cape Cod Cubs-EJHL) for a power play goal at 15:20, then took a pass from junior forward Greg Girtatos (Tyngsboro, MA/Bishop Guertin HS) and stuffed the puck home to tie the score at 17:50.
The Falcons had taken a 3-1 lead earlier in the second period. Sophomore forward Sean Loebs (Cresskill, NJ/Connecticut Jr. Wolfpack) deflected home a shot from the point by senior defenseman Brett Provost (Ludlow, MA/Connecticut Jr. Wolfpack) with FSU holding a man advantage at 7:16, and then freshman forward Ryan Connolly (Wappingers Falls, NY/New York Applecore) scored his second goal of the game, tipping home a shot by sophomore defenseman Derek Giansanti (Newington, CT/Connecticut Jr. Wolfpack) at 8:54.
Each team scored once in the first period. Connolly put FSU in front when he took a pass from freshman forward John Celli (Leominster, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) and scored at the 1:05 mark. Senior forward Phil Bronner (Wilbraham, MA/Springfield Jr. Falcons-EJHL) tied the score for the Corsairs when he converted a pass from senior forward Dave McDonald (Wakefield, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors-EJHL) to tie the score at 9:23.
"We've been playing 1-1 and 2-2 ties, and with a game Tuesday and no practice Wednesday, I knew that we might get off to a slow start," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. "We were down 3-1 in the second period, and got a power play goal by Boisvert, and then he scored when he roofed a beautiful shot on the backhand. It's our first hat trick as a team, and it was a real good bounce back game for us."
UMass Dartmouth outshot the Falcons, 49-35. Senior goaltender Ryan Williams (Milton, ON/Huntsville Otters-OPJHL) made 31 saves for the Corsairs, while junior Randy Wolcott (East Haven, CT/Wisconsin-Stevens Point) and sophomore Dan Finn (Fitchburg, MA/Fitchburg HS) combined to stop 42 shots for Fitchburg State.
UMass Dartmouth is now 9-7-6 and 8-3-5 in the MASCAC, while Fitchburg State is now 9-12-2 and 8-7-1 in the MASCAC. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Plymouth State Saturday. The Falcons will host Westfield State Saturday.
