FRAMINGHAM, MA – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team defeated host Framingham State, 3-2, in the final Massachusetts Collegiate Athletic Conference game of the regular season for both teams at the Loring Arena Tuesday evening.
After a scoreless first period, sophomore forward Dmitry Antipin (Novosibirsk, Russia/Cape Cod Cubs-EJHL) put the Corsairs on top, 1-0, when he converted a pass from senior forward Dan Dempsey (Norwell, PA/ Lebanon Valley College).
The Rams tied the score on the first shift of the third period when a shot bounced in off the skate of a Corsair defender. Senior forward William Colclough (Naples, FL/Peoria Mustangs-CSHL) gave UMass Dartmouth a 2-1 lead with a third period power play goal, then senior forward Nick Marquis (Londonderry, NH/Valley Jr. Warriors-EJHL) made it 3-1 when he put the second rebound of his own shot behind FSU goaltender Nick Cafrelli. Framingham State scored less than a minute later, but could come no closer.
"It was a real gritty effort by our team," aaid UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. "Nick Marquis made a great effort on the game winning goal, and we turned in a gutsy performance, since we were without three defensemen and one of our forwards due to injuries. We may have to conduct tryouts again when we resume practice."
The Corsairs outshot the Rams, 49-35. Senior goaltender Ryan Williams (Milton, ON/Huntsville Otters-OPJHL) made 33 saves for the Corsairs, while Cafrelli stopped 46 shots for Framingham State.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 10-7-7 and 9-3-6 in the MASCAC with the win, while Framingham State dropped to 2-19-3 and 0-15-3 in the MASCAC with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host a MASCAC semi-final playoff game next Tuesday evening. The game was the final action of the season for Framingham State.
