NEW BEDFORD, Mass. – Junior Shaun Walters (Plymouth, Mich.) scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner with less than seven minutes remaining in regulation, to power the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's ice hockey team to a 4-3 victory over visiting Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) rival Plymouth State University this afternoon at Hetland Arena.
The Corsairs raised their overall record to 2-2 and 2-1 in the conference circuit, while the Panthers fell to 2-4 and 1-2, respectively.
"We expected a tight battle in a rematch of the 2013 MASCAC Championship Game," Head Coach John Rolli said. "Today's win was a step in the right direction. The 14 underclassmen—nine sophomores and five freshmen— of our 19 skaters are gaining valuable experience in important conference matchups."
UMass Dartmouth's top line was the offensive catalyst for the hosts, producing three of the Corsairs' four markers. Walters led his mates with three points, on two markers and an assist, while sophomore Mike Restuccia (Malden, Mass.) and senior Greg Girtatos (Tyngsboro, Mass.) each registered two points. Restuccia netted a goal and handed out a helper, while Girtatos contributed a pair of assists.
UMass Dartmouth charged out of the gates, cracking the scoring column just 40 seconds into the first frame. Senior Dmitry Antipin (Novosibirskm Russia) pounced on his own rebound to net his first of the season. The Corsairs continued to apply the offensive pressure, when Walters converted on the power-play at the 13-minute, 51-second mark. Restuccia and Girtatos were credited with assists as the hosts took a 2-0 advantage into the intermission.
The Panthers capitalized on two power-play opportunities to account for the second period scoring. Sophomore Josh Woody (Sunderland, Md.) put the visitors on the board just 100 seconds into the stanza. Plymouth State converted on its ensuing power-play, when sophomore Zach Fox (Sandown, N.H.) netted the equalizer at the six-minute, 30-second mark.
In a back and forth third period, UMass Dartmouth regained its lead just 21 seconds into the third. The Corsairs took advantage of the extra skater, when Restuccia potted his third marker on the campaign. Freshman Ian McGilvrey (Omaha, Neb.) forged a 3-all tie midway through the final period, registering the visitors' third power-play goal at 10-minutes, 28-seconds. Walters capped the afternoon's scoring with a brilliant move through the attacking zone to free himself for the eventual game-winner. Sophomore John Sartell (Wakefield, Mass.) was awarded an assist on the decisive strike.
Senior Ben Vandervies (Hanna, Alberta) matched his season-high with 41 stops to backstop the Corsairs to the victory, while classmate Tyler Ingerson (Concord, N.H.) produced 45 saves in the loss for the Panthers.
UMass Dartmouth will return to the ice at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 21, when the Corsairs travel to MASCAC rival Salem State University. Plymouth Stat will be back in action at 4:45 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23, when the Panthers travel to Worcester State in a MASCAC matchup.
