Wildcats Shut Out Corsairs, 4-0
NEW BEDFORD, Mass. – Freshman Stefan Brucato (Lake Elsinore, Cali.) and senior Eddie Patterson (Cinnaminson, N.J.) each netted a pair of scores to lift Johnson and Wales University over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's ice hockey team, 4-0, in a non-conference matchup on Thursday evening at the Hetland Arena.
The Corsairs continue to struggle as they drop their second straight contest (2-8-2), while the Wildcats reach double digits in wins on the year (10-3).
Brucato did all of his scoring in the opening stanza. The freshman found the back of the net just 1:26 into the contest off an assist from teammate Cody Sarmiento (Sarasota, Fla.). With 3:06 remaining in the opening period, sophomore Josh Obregon (Omaha, Neb.) set up Brucato for his third score of the campaign and second in the game.
Patterson took charge of the offense for the rest of the game, scoring his sixth and seventh markers of the season in the final two periods. The co-captain's third period goal was on a power play and was set up by junior Jason Healey.
UMass Dartmouth had plenty of opportunities to score, but were shut down by goaltender Joey Ballmer. The freshman Wildcat turned away 25 attempts to en route to his 10th victory of the year, while Ben Vandervies (Hanna, AB) and JJ Solloway (Derry, N.H.) split time between the pipes in the loss.
The Wildcats outshot the home team by a total of 42-25 and the Corsairs spent 27 minutes in the penalty box on eight penalties throughout the game.
UMass Dartmouth resumes conference play on Saturday when they host Worcester State at 4:40 p.m.
