NEW BEDFORD, Mass. – Senior forward Curtis Martin (Okotoks, Alberta) scored the final two goals of the contest to lift Worcester State University over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's ice hockey team, 2-1, in a Massachusetts Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at Hetland Arena.
The Corsairs (2-9-2, 2-5 MASCAC) dropped their fourth consecutive league game, while the Lancers (6-6-1, 1-5-1 MASCAC) earned their first MASCAC victory of the campaign.
With 4:11 remaining in regulation and the score locked at one a piece, Martin put home the game-winning goal for Worcester State off assists from teammates Cody Osburn (Sacramento, Cali.) and Stephan Rock (Tulsa, Okla.). Back in the second period, the senior forward scored his first goal of the contest when he beat UMass Dartmouth goaltender JJ Solloway (Derry, N.H.) to tie the game during a power play opportunity. Earning helpers were freshman Alex Dewitz (Oronoco, Minn.) and junior Stephan Rock (Tulsa, Okla.).
The lone goal for the home team came with 15:30 left in the opening stanza. Freshman forward Tanner Zacharewicz (Ludlow, Mass.) beat the visiting goalie for his third strike of the campaign. Sophomore Mike Restuccia (Malden, Mass.) and captain Nate Dupere (Fall River, Mass.) were awarded assists on the scoring play.
UMass Dartmouth was presented with a golden scoring opportunity when forward Shaun Walters (Plymouth, Mich.) was awarded a penalty shot in the second period, but the junior was turned away by Worcester State goaltender Salvatore Tecci.
Tecci recorded 33 saves and earned his third win in net this season, while Solloway, who was filling in for the injured Ben Vandervies (Hanna, Alberta), turned away 33 attempts in the loss for the Corsairs.
UMass Dartmouth returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 16, when the Corsairs travel to Framingham State for a 7:20 p.m. MASCAC matchup.
