Corsairs Strike Early to Defeat the Rams, 2-1

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – Two first period goals lift the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's ice hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Framingham State in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action this evening at Loring Arena.

The Corsairs avenged an early season loss to the Rams and improved to 3-9-2 on the year and 3-5 in the conference.  The Rams drop their third consecutive game to fall to 6-6-1 overall and 4-3-1 in the MASCAC.

Despite dominating play in the first period and outshooting the Corsairs 17-7, the Rams trailed by a pair of goals.  Junior Shaun Walters (Plymouth, Mich.) staked the visitors a 1-0 lead when he converted off a feed from sophomore Mike Restuccia (Malden, Mass.) with just over six minutes remaining in the first.  Five minutes later, freshman Tanner Zacharewicz (Ludlow, Mass.) converted on a power play opportunity for the eventual game winner and his fourth of the season.

The Rams cut the Corsair lead in half just 1:24 into the second period when junior Brendan McCarron (Millbury, Mass.) found the back of the net for the seventh time this season

Framingham State senior Eric Ward (Haverhill, Mass.) had a shot at an open net with two minutes remaining in the third, but could not convert.

The Rams outshot their opponent 33-19 for the game and the Corsairs were 1-of-5 on power play opportunities.  Solloway recorded 32 saves in route to his first victory of the season, while Ram senior Nick Cafrelli (San Jose, CA) made 17 saves in the loss.

UMass Dartmouth continues MASCAC play on Saturday when they travel to Plymouth State for a 6 p.m. contest.
