WESTFIELD, Mass. – UMass Dartmouth ice hockey duo Casey Shea (Woburn, Mass.) and Steven Leonard (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) both collected their first Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) honors of the season on Monday, as Shea was named Player of the Week and Leonard Rookie of the Week following a 2-1 week for the Corsairs.
In three games, Shea posted seven points, including at least one goal and an assist in all outings. In the Corsairs’ narrow 5-4 loss to No. 10/11 Babson last Tuesday, Shea scored his team’s final goal and assisted on UMass Dartmouth’s first score on the evening. He again tallied in both the goal and assist columns on Saturday as the Corsairs prevailed over Suffolk 5-4 in the opening round of the Manchester PAL/Stovepipe Tournament hosted by Southern New Hampshire University. Shea then got on the board twice in the first period in Sunday’s championship game against Johnson & Wales and assisted in the second period, leading UMass Dartmouth to the title with a 4-3 victory.
For the season, Shea leads UMass Dartmouth with 16 points and 10 assists, and ranks tied for ninth nationally with 1.78 points per game. His seven assists in MASCAC play sits tied atop the league’s statistical standings. The junior is in the midst of a four-game point-scoring streak and has registered at least one goal and one assist in each of those contests.
Leonard paced UMass Dartmouth with a career-high three points against the Rams on Saturday. The freshman collected assists on two of the Corsairs’ first three goals, and then scored the game-winner with just a minute and a half left in the third period for the second goal of his career. On the game, he upped his season point total to four.
UMass Dartmouth looks to extend its two-game winning streak on Thursday, as they return home after a six-game road trip. The Corsairs will host MASCAC foe Fitchburg State at Hetland Arena at 7:30 p.m.
