WESTFIELD, Mass. – UMass Dartmouth freshman Steven Leonard (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) repeated as the MASCAC Ice Hockey Rookie of the Week on Monday, recognized for his part in a 2-0 week that vaulted the Corsairs into sole possession of second place in the conference standings.
Leonard collected three points consisting of two goals and an assist in two homes MASCAC contests. In the Corsairs’ 2-1 victory over Fitchburg State on Thursday, the forward netted the game’s first goal two and a half minutes into the second period, and assisted on Brendan McDonough’s (Wilmington, Mass.) game-winner later in the frame. On Saturday, Leonard netted his fourth goal of the season to break the 1-1 tie near the end of the first period en route to a 4-3 win for UMass Dartmouth over Framingham State.
On the season thus far, Leonard owns four goals and three assists with all of his points coming in UMass Dartmouth victories. He ranks fourth in the MASCAC in freshman scoring and tied for second among the league’s rookies with four goals.
The Corsairs are in the midst of a four-game winning streak, the program’s longest since the 2011-12 season, and sit 7-4-0 overall and 4-2-0 in MASCAC play. Seven wins is the highest total for a UMass Dartmouth hockey team before the holiday break since 2010, as the Corsairs return to the ice on Jan. 8 against Worcester State at 5 p.m.
