WESTFIELD, MA-Host Westfield State took a 3-0 lead after the first period and defeated the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team, 7-3, in a Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference game at the Amelia Park Ice Arena Saturday evening.
The Owls scored thrice in each of the first two periods and took a 6-2 lead into the second intermission. Junior forward Joe Hill (Newburyport, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors), junior defenseman Adam Horgan (Clayton, NC/Jersey Hitmen) and sophomore forward Rob Dudley (Douglas, MA/Middlesex School) scored for the Corsairs, who out shot Westfield State, 30-21. Ray Monroe made 27 saves for the Owls, while senior goaltender Jon Dryjowicz-Burek (Ludlow, MA/Springfield Jr. Falcons) and freshman goaltender Jon Morrow (Romeo, MI/Jersey Hitmen) combined to make 14 saves for UMD. Senior forward Casey Mignone had two goals and two assists for Westfield State, and sophomore forward Jimmy Alexander had a goal and three assists.
"We got behind early," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. "They scored two goals in less than a minute early in the first period, and we just couldn't recover."
UMD dropped to 5-6-1 and 1-5-1 in MASCAC play with the defeat, while Westfield State improved to 7-4-2 and 5-0-2 in the MASCAC with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Salem State Thursday evening.
