BOSTON, MA-Senior goaltender Collin Tracy (Medford, MA/Medford HS) made 32 saves to lead the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team to a 4-1 victory against host Suffolk in a non-conference match at the Walter Brown Arena Saturday evening.
UMass Dartmouth led 2-1 after the first period. Junior forward Rob Dudley (Douglas, MA/Middlesex School) broke a scoreless tie when he converted passes from junior forwards Andrew Pontes (New Bedford, MA/Winchendon School) and Mike Owens (South Boston, MA/Boston Jr. Bulldogs) to put the Corsairs on top at 15:06 of the first period. Senior defenseman Mickey Dudley (Douglas, MA/Boston Jr. Bruins) fired home a shot from the point to make it 2-0 at the 19:47 mark, but Andrew Monesi of the Rams picked up a loose puck in front of the Corsair net and scored with five seconds left in the first period to cut the UMD advantage to 2-1.
In the second period, senior forward Todd Bartelson (Pepperell, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) made it 3-1 when he converted a feed from senior forward Billy Manning (Stoughton, MA/Bridgewater Jr. Bandits) at 9:48. Owens scored the final goal of the game at 15:56 of the third period.
“Collin Tracy stood his head, he made 32 saves,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “It was a real back and forth type of game, more Suffolk’s style of play than the type of game that we like to play. It was the first time we played away from home, and it was a good road win.”
Suffolk out shot UMD, 33-29. Jeff Rose made 25 saves for the Rams. The Corsairs killed off all five of their penalties, and were scoreless in two power play chances.
The Corsairs improved to 2-0-0 with the victory, while the Rams dropped to 2-2-0 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Westfield State in their Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference opener Thursday evening.
