SALEM, MA--Host Salem State came from behind to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team, 3-2, in the 2009-10 Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference opener for both teams at the Rockett Ice Arena Tuesday evening.
Junior forward Todd Bartelson (Pepperell, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) scored a pair of power play goals in the first period to stake UMass Dartmouth to a 2-0 lead. Damen Nisula's shorthanded goal at 4:37 of the first period put the Vikings on the board. Ryan Pezzulo and Mike Genovese scored power play goals in the second period to put SSC on top.
"Their first goal proved to be the difference," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. "They stole the puck and went in on a breakaway which changed the complexion of the game."
Salem State out shot UMass Dartmouth, 41-36. Senior goaltender Jon Dryjowicz-Burek (Ludlow, MA/Springfield Jr. Falcons) made 38 saves for the Corsairs, while James LaCour stopped 34 shots for the Vikings.
UMD dropped to 2-1-0 with the defeat, while Salem State improved to 1-0-0 with the victory. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Westfield State Thursday evening.
