The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team raced to a 3-0 lead and held off visiting Worcester State, 3-2, in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference game at the Stephan Hetland Memorial Ice Arena Thursday evening.
Senior forward Jason Stahl (Londonderry, NH/Valley Jr. Warriors) gave UMass Dartmouth the early lead when he scored twice in the first period. With the Corsairs enjoying a man advantage, he took a pass from senior defenseman Adam Horgan (Clayton, NC/Jersey Hitmen) and fired a shot from the lower edge of the face-off circle past WSU freshman goalie Taylor Fant (Denver, CO/Boulder Bison) at the 13:02 mark. Senior forward Billy Manning (Stoughton, MA/Bridgewater Jr. Bandits) also assisted.
Stahl broke in again and scored at the 18:16 mark to make it 2-0. Horgan and sophomore Ricky Miller (Colorado Springs, CO/Northern Cyclones) assisted. Freshman forward Ryan Ruddock (Amesbury, MA/Eastern Kodiaks) gave the Corsairs a 3-0 lead in the second period. Ruddock re-directed home a pass from Manning at the 13:20 mark.
The Lancers scored a pair of power play goals in the third period to close the gap. Junior forward John Cahalane (Tewksbury, MA/Laconia Leafs) tipped in a shot from the point by sophomore defenseman Tim Bowman (Moorpark, CA/Tulsa Rampage) at 10:44 to make it 3-1. Freshman forward Ryan Quirk (Brockton, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) scored, with an assist from Bowman, at 19:19 to make it 3-2. But the Corsairs held the Lancers off the rest of the way.
"We were fortunate to come out of that game with a win," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. "We were up 3-0 going into the third period and we let them back into it, and they took advantage with two power play goals. We have to do a better job of protecting the lead. Jason Stahl scored two goals in the first period to put us up, 2-0, and Ryan Ruddock scored in the second period to give us a 3-0 lead. They came back, but we came in looking for two points, and that's what we got."
The Corsairs out shot the Lancers, 31-21. Senior goalie Collin Tracy (Medford, MA/Medford HS) made 19 saves for UMD while Fant stopped 23 shots for WSU.
The Corsairs improved to 5-1-1 and 3-0-1 in the MASCAC with the victory, while the Lancers fell to 2-2-3 and 1-1-1 in the MASCAC with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Stonehill Saturday. Worcester State will host Fitchburg State Saturday.
