FRAMINGHAM, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team grabbed a 3-0 first period lead, scored four times in the second period and coasted to a 7-2 victory over host Framingham State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference game at the Loring Ice Arena Thursday evening.
The Corsairs led 3-0 after the first period and led 7-2 after two periods. Sophomore forward Mike Owens (South Boston, MA/Boston Jr. Bulldogs) led the Corsair effort with a hat trick. Owens' third goal came with UMass Dartmouth shorthanded. Senior forward Joe Hill (Newburyport, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) scored twice for the Corsairs, while junior defenseman Mike Grzelcyk (Watertown, MA/Winchendon School) and sophomore forward Bill Colclough (Naples, FL/Peoria Mustangs) each scored their first collegiate goals for UMD.
"We moved the puck very well," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. "We jumped on them early, we went up 7-2 after two periods, and we just played a good, solid hockey game."
UMass Dartmouth out shot Framingham State, 51-19. Senior goaltender Collin Tracy (Medford, MA/Medford HS) made 17 saves for UMD, while Terence Sullivan and Nick Cafrelli combined to make 44 saves for the Rams.
The Corsairs improved to 7-1-1 and 4-0-1 in the MASCAC with the victory, while the Rams fell to 0-8-0 and 0-6-0 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Fitchburg State Sunday.
