NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's lacrosse team outscored host Massachusetts Maritime at the outset of the second half, 9-0, and went on to defeat the Buccaneers, 14-3, in a non-conference match at Clean Harbors Stadium Wednesday evening.
Freshman attacker Connor Gaffney (Andover, MA/Andover HS), senior midfielder Nick Brett (Loudon, NH/Merrimack Valley HS/AIC) and junior midfielder Brendan Dalton (Braintree, MA/Braintree HS) each scored twice as the Corsairs scored the first nine goals of the second half, increasing a 5-1 halftime advantage to 14-1 with 9:10 remaining.
Brett led UMass Dartmouth with four goals, Gaffney had three, and Dalton and senior midfielder Christian Roberto (Wakefield, MA/Malden Catholic HS) each scored twice. Dalton and Gaffney each added two assists. John Hojnoski scored twice for the Bucs, and Dan Langley added the other goal.
"We played very good lacrosse for 40 minutes today," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Kevin Mahoney. "We played solid defense, we just need to calm down and relax on offense. We are playing really good team defense, we're taking away a lot of teams' transition games and making them take long shots, and we have a strong keeper, and that will keep us in every game. We did a lot of good things; we just have some things to work on."
The Corsairs outshot the Bucs, 39-20. UMD sophomore goalie Nick Thayer (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) played the first 52:35, made 11 saves and allowed one goal before junior Pete Foley (Northbridge, MA/ Blackstone Valley HS) finished up. Paul Painten and Eric Kuehn combined to make 17 stops for MMA.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 8-1 with the victory, while Mass Maritime dropped to 5-6 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit UMass Boston Saturday.
