How it Happened
Junior Jordan Torres (New Bedford, Mass.) netted a pair of goals for the Corsairs, with senior Austin Titus (Gloucester, Mass.) posting a goal and an assist. Senior goalkeeper Matt LaFond (Bridgewater, Mass.) made 10 stops in net and junior Matt Daly (Chelmsford, Mass.) caused a pair of turnovers with five ground balls.
Three Warriors, including sophomore Samuel Watson (Trumbull, Conn.), junior Matthew Rougeot (Cheshire, Conn.) and Harrison Urda (Milford, N.H.), totaled two goals apiece. Watson chipped in two assists for a game-high four points, and ECSU was backstopped by a solid performance from junior Chris Gorman (Shrewsbury, Mass.) in the crease with 11 saves.
Torres struck with a rifle to open scoring in the first quarter, but beginning with Rougeot's tally at 11:04, the Warriors rattled off three-straight to secure the lasting advantage before the end of the first. Watson scored his first goal to put ECSU up 2-1, and assisted to senior Nick Biasetti (Brookfield, Mass.) at 6:12.
UMass Dartmouth cut back within one to start the second, when Titus found Torres on the corner for the game's only man-up goal, but Watson was there again to extend the lead back to two goals before halftime. Out of the intermission, Urda and freshman Noah Lohman (Branford, Conn.) were the only two players to register on the scoreboard to put the visitors up four with 15 minutes left.
Face-off man Jesse Schulze (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y.) and the Warriors went a perfect 6-for-6 in the circle on the fourth quarter to keep the ball out of the Corsairs' hands, and despite final-stanza goals by Titus and freshman Mike Rizzo (Bridgewater, Mass.), the Warriors tacked on three more before the final whistle.
Inside the Numbers
- Titus' score in the fourth quarter marked the second man-down goal for the season for the Corsairs, and Torres' man-up goal in the second was the team's 19th of the year.
- All said, Schulze and the Warriors gathered 13 of the 16 face-offs on the game, with Anthony Choronzy (Clinton, Conn.) scooping all six of his game-high ground balls off the draw.
- Both teams combined for just 1-14 on extra-man chances in the penalty-ridden contest.
- The Warriors rise to 22-2 on the all-time series between the two programs, and have claimed the last two meetings.
UMass Dartmouth will vie for an LEC playoff berth in its final regular-season contest on Friday, as the Corsairs travel to Salem State for a 7 p.m. start. Eastern Connecticut travels to league-leader Keene State at the same time.
