LEICESTER, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's lacrosse team held host Becker scoreless for the first three quarters and went on to defeat the Hawks, 17-2, in a non-conference match at Alumni Field Tuesday afternoon.
Junior attacker Nick Brett (Loudon, NH/Merrimack Valley HS/AIC) led the Corsairs attack with seven goals, junior midfielder Christian Roberto (Wakefield, MA/Malden Catholic HS) added four goals and an assist, And senior midfielder Stephen Espinola (Groton, MA/Groton-Dunstable HS) scored two goals and added two assists. UMass Dartmouth scored the first 17 goals of the game before Becker scored twice in the final two minutes.
"We played good lacrosse, we possessed the ball, and we played well overall," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Kevin Mahoney. "We played good defense, freshman midfielder Jordan McPherson (Westwood, MA/Westwood HS) did really well on face offs, and (senior midfielder) Paul Nunes (Mansfield, MA/Mansfield HS) did well on ground balls. We moved the ball well, we got good shots on offense, and (sophomore goalkeeper) Pete Foley (Northbridge, MA/Blackstone Valley Regional HS) made some good saves.
The Corsairs outshot the Hawks 52-29. Foley made 14 saves for UMD, while Michael Munoz and Josh Smith combined to make 12 saves for Becker.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 2-0 with the victory, while Becker dropped to 0-1 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Wheaton Thursday. Becker will host Anna Maria Friday.
