BOSTON, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's lacrosse team scored six of the first seven goals in the second half and went on to defeat host UMass Boston, 14-7, in a Little East Conference match at the Clark Athletic Center Saturday.
Leading at halftime, 6-4, the Corsairs got a goal from senior attackman Andrew Foster (Danvers, MA/Danvers HS) and two more from sophomore midfielder Christian Roberto (Wakefield, MA/Malden Catholic HS). After Dale Nunn scored for the Beacons, junior midfielder Stephen Espinola (Groton, MA/Groton-Dunstable HS) scored unassisted. Junior attackman Josh Arsenault (Revere, MA/Malden Catholic HS) followed with a man-down goal, and Roberto scored with 9:0 remaining to give UMass Dartmouth a 12-5 advantage.
Roberto led the Corsairs with five goals, while Foster and Espinola each contributed three and Arsenault had two. Foster also had two assists. Aaron Pollock led UMass Boston with two goals.
"We played much better in the second half," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Kevin Mahoney. "We had a fgood defensive effort. We made some mistakes early on, but, outside of that, we still played well. We were aggressive, we used our depth, and had more energy in the third and fourth quarters."
The Corsairs outshot the Beacons, 46-22. Sophomore goaltender Cameron Crown (Walpole, MA/Walpole HS) made seven saves for UMass Dartmouth, while Anthony Fitti made 14 for UMB. UMD failed to convert their only man-up opportunity, while UMass Boston was one for six.
UMD improved to 5-5 and 1-1 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while UMass Boston dropped to 3-6 and 0-2 in the LEC with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Roger Williams Wednesday evening..
