MANSFIELD, CT-Host Eastern Connecticut State raced to a 12-4 halftime lead and went on to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's lacrosse team, 15-6, in a Little East Conference match at the ECSU Outdoor Athletic Complex Tuesday evening.
Junior midfielder Stephen Espinola (Groton, MA/Groton-Dunstable HS) scored twice for the Corsairs in the first half. Sophomore midfielder Alex Reposa and junior attackman Josh Arsenault (Revere, MA/Malden Catholic HS) added goals for UMass Dartmouth just before halftime.
Espinola led UMD with three goals, while Arsenault added two. Grant Albertson scored five goals for the Warriors, while Vinny Tornatore added three.
"Our youth and inexperience hurt us," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Kevin Mahoney. "They are a good team, and tan experienced team, and they took advantage of their opportunities, and we didn't. They were the better team tonight, and they deserved to win."
Eastern Connecticut outshot the Corsairs, 41-38. Sophomore goaltenders Cameron Crown (Walpole, MA/Walpole HS) made 17 saves for UMass Dartmouth, while Donald Berube, Drew Deane and Jamie Tommins combined to make 18 stops for the Warriors. UMD scored on one of three man-up opportunities, while ECSU scored on all three of their chances.
UMD dropped to 6-7 and 2-2 in the Little East Conference with the defeat, while Eastern Connecticut improved to 8-4 and 3-1 in LEC play with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Plymouth State Saturday.
