Men's Lacrosse Set for Season Opener

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's lacrosse team will be looking for improvement when the Corsairs open their 2011 season by hosting Salve Regina Wednesday afternoon at Cressy Field. Game time is 4:00 p.m.

The Corsairs went 7-10 last season, advancing to the Little East Conference playoffs and losing at Plymouth State.

"We have many returning players from last year's team that won seven games," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Kevin Mahoney. "We lost four games by a total of seven goals and I am hoping that experience will help us in 2011."

Senior captains Stephen Espinola (Groton, MA/Groton-Dunstable HS), Josh Arsenault (Revere, MA/Malden Catholic HS) , Bobby Smith (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield HS) , and Paul Nunes (Mansfield, MA/Mansfield HS) return.

The offensive leaders for UMass Dartmouth will be Arsenault, Espinola and Smith. Espinola was a first team All-Conference midfielder in 2010, while Arsenault scored 46 goals and added 20 assists last season. Other returning players on offense include senior Charles Spencer (Shrewsbury, MA/Shrewsbury HS), juniors Christian Roberto (Wakefield, MA/Malden Catholic HS) and Alex Reposa (Shrewsbury, MA), and sophomores Brendan Dalton (Braintree, MA/Braintree HS), and Mike Lynch (Lynn, MA/Lynn English HS). Newcomers include junior Nick Brett (Loudon, NH/Merrimack Valley HS), and freshmen Adam Niden (Walpole, MA/Walpole HS), Todd Davis (Sandwich, MA/Sandwich HS), Justin Lawless (Quincy, MA/Archbishop Williams HS), Dennis Healy (Hanover, MA/Hanover HS), Dan Dawley (Revere, MA/Malden Catholic HS), James Smith (Methuen, MA/Central Catholic HS), Torrey Savoie (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional HS), and Sam Warner (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional HS).

Defensively, several returning players will be counted on. They include seniors Paul Hanna (Sandwich, MA/Sandwich HS) and Alex Parks (Norton, MA/Mansfield HS), junior Eric Hubbard (Shrewsbury, MA/Shrewsbury HS), and sophomores Ryan Holbrook (Braintree, MA/Braintree HS), Larry Gilvarg (Natick, MA/Natick HS), and Dave Alhquist (Reading, MA. Freshmen Steve Tarpey (Shrewsbury, MA/Shrewsbury HS) and Jared Wright (Gloucester, MA/Gloucester HS) will make their presence felt.

In goal, sophomore Pete Foley (Northbridge, MA/Blackstone RVHS) and junior Andrew Weaver (Westport, MA/Westport HS) have returned along with newcomer Nick Thayer, a freshman (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS). Freshman defensive midfielders Jordan MacPherson (Westwood, MA/Westwood HS) and Brad Bell (South Hadley, MA/South Hadley) will help strengthen the defense.

"We have a nice mix of veterans and first year players and we are looking for the right combination that will produce high quality shots and aggressive defensive play," said Mahoney. "Some of the freshmen like Adam Niden, Nick Thayer, Todd Davis, Jared Wright and Justin Lawless have had an excellent preseason and we look forward to seeing them during the regular season. We expect strong from seasons from our senior players, and we look forward to the challenging season ahead of us".
