NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's lacrosse team will try to win a first-round Little East Conference playoff game for the first time since 2004 when they travel to Plymouth State in a first-round playoff game Tuesday. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. at Panther Field in Plymouth.
The Corsairs finished 6-8 overall and 3-4 in LEC play and drew the fifth seed for the tournament. PSU is 6-7 overall and 4-3.
The teams have met in the first round of the playoffs twice in the past five years. PSU won at Cressy Field last year, 8-7, and UMD won at home, 7-5, in 2004. That was the Corsairs' last victory in the LEC playoffs. They have advanced to the first round in each of the last four years, but haven't won.
The Panthers won the regular season meeting between the teams at Cressy Field, 10-8, scoring six consecutive goals in a span of six and a half minutes in the fourth quarter to overcome a 7-5 UMD advantage.
"We are looking forward to playing Plymouth State and hope to adjust some of our schemes to correct our mistakes," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Kevin Mahoney. "It is always nice to play one of our rivals twice in a season. It was a great game against Plymouth State for us, except for part of the fourth quarter. We are looking to play a complete game for 60 minutes. We have been playing real well in spurts, and are looking forward to giving our best effort to go as far as we can in the playoffs. Some of our players like (senior attackman) Bobby Young (Billerica, MA/Billerica HS) and junior attackman Andrew Foster (Danvers, MA/Danvers HS) have been playing real well and we hope for them to continue their excellent play/"
The winner of Tuesday's game will advance to a semi-final match at top-seeded Eastern Connecticut State Thursday. The championship match Saturday is at the highest remaining seed.
