Freshman forward Nick Gontijo
BRIDGEWATER, MA-Freshman forward Nick Gontijo (Hudson, MA/Hudson HS) scored a goal in each half and junior goalkeepers Mike Phelan (Carver, MA/Carver HS) and Jon Doucette (Boxford, MA/Masconomet HS) combined to record the shutout as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's soccer team blanked host Bridgewater State, 2-0, in a non-conference match at Swenson Pitch Tuesday.
Gontijo was assisted by sophomore forward Victor Ferreira (St. Michael, Portugal/New Bedford HS) and junior midfielder Anthony dos Santos (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) when he scored in the eighth minute to give UMass Dartmouth a 1-0 lead. In the second half, he took a pass from freshman midfielder Ryland Foster-Gorbach (West Roxbury, MA/Catholic Memorial HS) and scored in the 52nd minute to make it 2-0.
"Nick's goals were well-struck," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Henry Almeida. "We dominated the match early, and we had control until the latter stages of the first half, when they came back, and we were able to hold on until the break. In the second half, we made some adjustments and Nick found a gap and was able to go through and score his second goal of the match. It was a big win for us. It's a step in the right direction, and gets us off our skid."
Bridgewater State outshot UMass Dartmouth, 16-12. Phelan made eight saves for UMD, while D.J. Siewierski stopped two shots for BSU.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 10-6-1 with the victory, while Bridgewater State dropped to 5-6-3 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Eastern Connecticut State Saturday.
