NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Two members of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's soccer team have earned Little East Conference honors.

Junior goalkeeper Mike Phelan (Carver, MA/Carver HS) has been named LEC Goalkeeper of the Week, while freshman forward Nick Gontijo (Hudson, MA/Hudson HS) was named LEC Rookie of the Week.

Phelan blanked two opponents in 168 minutes and 45 seconds of action last week, stopping four shots to hand first place Eastern Connecticut State their first conference loss of the season by a 1-0 score. He made eight saves in playing most of a 2-0 shutout against Bridgewater State. It was the second time this season he has been so honored.

Gontijo scored twice and added an assist last week, leading the Corsairs and contributing to all three of their goals. He scored twice against BSU and set up the winning goal against the Warriors.

"Mike has been working very hard to get himself ready for the end of the season," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Henry Almeida. "He had shutouts in two big matches against teams we hadn't beaten in a few years. We're glad to see that he's finally being recognized."

"We're also very happy for Nick," said Almeida. "He's put in a lot of work at training sessions to make himself a more complete player. He's become a leader and he makes players around him better. We're excited to have him on our team for the next three seasons."

UMass Dartmouth will take an 11-6-1 record into their LEC semi-final playoff match at Eastern Connecticut Wednesday afternoon.
