Men's Soccer Wins Opener, Downs Coast Guard in OT

GORHAM., ME-Junior forward Victor Ferreira (St. Michael, Portugal/New Bedford HS) scored twice, including the game-winner in sudden death overtime, to lead the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over the Coast Guard in the 2012 season opener for both teams at the Southern Maine Invitational at Hannaford Field Friday.

Ferreira converted a pass from junior midfielder Adam Philbin (Cumberland, RI/Cumberland HS/RIC/CCRI) and beat Bear goalkeeper Will Leffler from 10 yards out 9:36 into extra time to give the Corsairs the victory.
Ferreira scored UMD's first goal of the match, tying the game at 1-1 in the 33rd minute. Sophomore midfielders Ryland Foster-Gorbach (West Roxbury, MA/Catholic Memorial HS) crossed the ball to Ferreira, and sophomore midfielder John Macaroco (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) also drew an assist. Joe Bodzewski put USCGA up, 1-0, when he scored in the game's 12th minute.
"I was happy with the result," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Henry Almeida. "They're a big, athletic team and they scored early, but we came back, and we took control after Victor scored. I was impressed with the win. Everybody did their part, and we got to show off some of our depth."
The Bears out shot the Corsairs, 14-9. Senior goalkeeper Mike Phelan (Carver, MA/Carver HS) made four saves for UMass Dartmouth, while Leffler made three for the Coast Guard.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 1-0 with the victory, while Coast Guard dropped to 0-1 with the defeat. The Corsairs will play St. Joseph's (Maine), while the Bears will play host Southern Maine on the second and final day of the tournament tomorrow.
