Men's Soccer Shuts Out Daniel Webster, 4-0

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA--The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's soccer team won their third straight contest, shutting out visiting Daniel Webster 4-0 on Saturday evening in their 2012 home opener at Cressy Field.

Through the first three games the Corsairs have allowed just one goal en route to their fifth straight home opening win. Freshman forward Aelaf Solomon opened the scoring in the eighth minute when Daniel Webster freshman goalkeeper Sean Hamilton (Brookline, NH/Hollis-Brookline HS) misplayed the ball directly to Solomon who finished into the open net.

The Corsairs would take the 1-0 lead into the half as they controlled the pace throughout. In the second half, UMD pulled away as junior defender Jonathan DaCosta scored in the 63rd minute, sophomore forward Elton Borges scored in the 73rd minute, and senior midfielder Nelson Oliveira capped the scoring in the 89th minute. All four players netted their first goals of the season for the Corsairs.

"We played sound possession ball today as we controlled the pace," said UMass Dartmouth Assistant Coach Brian Medeiros. "We had the opportunity to have a lot of our team play today and it was good to see our starters and subs playing well together. It was also good to have four different players put up points for us tonight."

UMD outshot the Eagles 24-1, senior goalkeeper Mike Phelan (Carver, MA/Carver HS) did not face any shots as he picked up his third win of the year, with Hamilton making eight saves for Daniel Webster.

UMass Dartmouth improved to 3-0 with the victory, while Daniel Webster dropped to 0-3-1 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Salem State Wednesday. The Eagles will visit Emerson Wednesday.
