Borges put the Corsairs ahead when he intercepted a pass and went in and scored 30 seconds after the opening kickoff. Jovan Sempa tied the game when he scored for the Vikings in the 15th minute, but Borges scored again at 29:35, converting a pass from sophomore forward Nick Gontijo (Hudson, MA/Hudson HS) to put UMass Dartmouth ahead at halftime, 2-1.
Borges scored the only goal of the second half in the 56th minute, heading home a pass from sophomore midfielder Jordan Sindo (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS).
"They're a big, strong, athletic team, and we got on top of them early, which took them out of their rhythm," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Henry Almeida. "We played well in the first half, then we got away from our style of play, but the halftime break was exactly what we needed. We came back and played well in the second half. Jordan (Sindo), (sophomore midfielder) Ryland Foster-Gorbach (West Roxbury, MA/Catholic Memorial HS) and (junior midfielder) Adam Philbin (Cumberland, RI/CHS/RIC/CCRI) did a great job for us in the midfield."
UMD outshot the Vikings, 19-8. Senior goalkeeper Mike Phelan (Carver, MA/Carver HS) made four saves for the Corsairs, while Nondas Kargakis and Kevin O'Loughlin combined to make 10 stops for Salem State.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 4-0-0 with the victory, while the Vikings dropped to 1-4-0 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Plymouth State Saturday.
