PLYMOUTH, NH-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's soccer team scored twice early in the second half and held off host Plymouth State, 2-1, in the 2012 Little East Conference opener for both teams at Panther Field Saturday.
Junior midfielder Adam Philbin (Cumberland, RI/Cumberland HS/RIC/CCRI) put UMass Dartmouth ahead 1:03 into the second half when he took a pass from junior forward Victor Ferreira (St. Michael, Portugal/New Bedford HS) and fired home a shot from the top of the box to make it 1-0. Less than three minutes later, sophomore midfielder John Macaroco (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) headed home a pass from sophomore defender Josh Chao (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS/Central Connecticut State) to make it 2-0. Alex Herbert took a pass from Jacob Sjoberg and chipped home a shot from close range in the 85th minute, but the Corsairs held PSU off the rest of the way.
"It was our first conference match, and it was a big win for us," said UMass Dartmouth Assistant Coach Brian Medeiros. "(Senior goalkeeper) Mike Phelan (Carver, MA/Carver HS) had an excellent game. Adam Philbin scored his first goal of the season on a shot that was an absolute blazer into the upper left corner. Everyone got a chance to play today, we played all 25 guys, and it was good to get everyone some experience."
UMD outshot the Panthers, 14-7. Phelan (Carver, MA/Carver HS) made three saves for the Corsairs, while Bjorn Ohlsson made seven stops for Salem State.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 5-0-0 and 1-0-0 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while the Panthers dropped to 2-4-0 and 0-1-0 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Salve Regina Wednesday.
