NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's soccer team fell to visiting Bridgewater State, 2-1, in a non-conference match at Cressy Field Tuesday evening.
The loss came on senior night for the Corsairs and it was their second straight defeat at home.
Sophomore forward Steve McAvoy (Walpole, MA/Walpole HS) opened the scoring for the Bears in the 16th minute when he tallied his third goal of the season. Both squads would trade chances, but BSU would take the 1-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half the Corsairs knotted the game at one when sophomore defender Jacinto Centeio (Boston, MA/Madison Park HS) scored his first goal of the season in the 55th minute off a pass from junior forward Victor Ferreira (St. Michael, Portugal/New Bedford HS).
The Bears would answer in the 73rd minute when senior forward Simao Mendes (Brockton, MA/Brockton HS) netted his second goal of the season and the eventual game winner on a penalty kick.
"It's another difficult and unfortunate loss for us," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Henry Almeida. "We have been dominating our opponents and the pace of play, but have been unable to capitalize on our opportunities. With that I'm proud of our seniors, if it wasn't for them our program wouldn't be where it is today. We are a contender year in and year out thanks to their class. We wish them all the luck in the future."
The Corsairs outshot the Bears, 16-6. UMD senior goalkeepers Mike Phelan (Carver, MA/Carver HS) and Jon Doucette (Boxford, MA/Masconomet HS) each played a half and made a save, while junior Matt Bagley (Braintree, MA/Braintree HS) made seven stops for BSU.
UMass Dartmouth fell to 11-5-0 with the defeat, while the Bears improved to 8-7-1 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Eastern Connecticut State Saturday. Bridgewater State will visit Westfield State Saturday.
