WILLIMANTIC CT-Host Eastern Connecticut State broke a 1-1 tie with two goals late in the second half and went on to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's soccer team, 3-1, in the Little East Conference championship match at Nevers Field Saturday.
The Corsairs, who had trailed since the eighth minute, tied the game when sophomore midfielder Elton Borges (Praia, Cape Verde/Burke HS) headed home a pass from sophomore defender Josh Chao (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS/CCSU) at the 74:36 mark.
Mitch Power, who had scored the Warriors' first goal on a 22-yard free kick in the eighth minute, untied the game 43 seconds later when he headed in a pass from Carl Stensland to make it 2-1. Matt Furman scored for Eastern Connecticut less than three minutes later, at the 78:08 mark, assisted by Cory Tobler to account for the final margin.
"It was a good game, we played well, we played hard, and, unfortunately, we came up a little bit short," said UMass Dartmouth Assistant Coach Brian Medeiros. "They scored right after we tied up, and then they got the third goal because we had guys up trying to tie it up. We did a great job, and I'm proud of the team."
The Corsairs outshot the Warriors, 13-9. UMD senior goalkeeper Mike Phelan (Carver, MA/Carver HS) made one save, while Jordan Munsell made two stops for Eastern Connecticut State.
UMass Dartmouth dropped to 12-7-0 with the defeat, while Eastern Connecticut State improved to 17-1-1 with the victory. Eastern Connecticut State earned the Little East Conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championships. The match marked the conclusion of the season for UMass Dartmouth.
