Chao's Two Goals Boost Corsiars to Victory
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Men's Soccer team put on an impressive offensive performance as they defeated Southern Maine at Cressy Field this afternoon, 5-0.
UMass Dartmouth (6-3-0, 2-1 LEC) junior Josh Chao (New Bedford, Mass. / New Bedford) notched his fourth and fifth goals of the season. Also, adding goals were senior captain Adam Philbin Cumberland, R.I. / Cumberland), John Macaroco (New Bedford, Mass. / New Bedford) and Etiene Niyonsaba (Worcester, Mass. / Worcester North).
In the ninth minute of the contest, Philbin delivered a beautiful cross to Chao who one-timed hit home for his first goal of the match. Only five minutes ticked off the clock until the Corsairs struck again. After one half of play UMass Dartmouth held a 2-0 lead and was dominating the possession of the game.
Chao scored his second goal nine minutes into the second half. Chao streaked up the middle of the pitch with ball, juked around Southern Maine's goalkeeper Matthew Willis (Standish, Maine / Bonny Eagle) and rolled the ball into an uncontested net. Six minutes later, Victor Ferreira (St. Michael, Portugal / New, Bedford) assisted on a John Macaroco (New Bedford, Mass. / New Bedford) goal from atop the box.
The fifth and final goal for the Corsairs came when defenseman Alex Machado (New Bedford, Mass. / New Bedford) swung a ball into the box and Etiene Niyonsaba (Worcester, Mass. / Worcester North) managed to toe the ball pass the keeper in 67th minute.
Southern Maine (0-11-1, 0-3 LEC) attempted zero shots as UMass Dartmouth keeper Luis Carranza (New Bedford, Mass. / Greater New Bedford Voc. Tech) recorded a clean sheet. The Huskie goalkeeper Willis recorded 12 saves in the losing effort.
