Worcester State Rallies Past Men's Soccer, 5-2

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Worcester State University men's soccer team scored five second half goals to overcome a halftime deficit, defeating the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 5-2, this evening at Coughlin Field.

Senior Victor Ferreira (St. Michael, Portugal) cracked the scoring column in the 18th minute to provide the Corsairs with the lone marker of the first half. Ferreira ran onto a through ball from junior Ryland Foster-Gorbach (West Roxbury, Mass.) and deposited his 10th goal into the bottom left corner of the net.

The Lancers sparked their comeback in the 57th minute, when Eugene Duah scored his first marker of the season. Less than a minute later, Derek Alves gave the hosts the lead, finishing a rebound into the right side of the net. Alves recorded the game-winning goal in 69th minute, converting off a free kick.

UMass Dartmouth tried to stem the tide in the 75th minute, when junior Mike Diogo (Bristol, R.I.) recorded his second goal of the season off an assist from senior Adam Philbin (Cumberland, R.I.).

Worcester State sealed its fifth consecutive victory with insurance goals by Brendan Whitson and Alex Goncalves in the 77th and 87th minute, respectively.

Freshman Andrew Deane (Woburn, Mass.) made a season-high 11 saves in the loss, while Nick Zucco posted four stops to earn the victory.

UMass Dartmouth returns to action at 1 p.m. on Nov. 2, when the Corsairs travel to Little East rival Western Connecticut State University. UMass Dartmouth needs a win or tie to capture its first Little East regular-season title and the No.1 seed in the Little East Men's Soccer Championship.
