NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA--Host Lasell scored three goals in a span of less than four minutes at the end of the first half and the start of the second half and held off the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's soccer team, 3-1, in a non-conference match at Taylor Field Tuesday.
Junior defender Alex Bettencourt (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) put the Corsairs ahead, 1-0 when he dived to head in a free kick by freshman midfielder Andrew Krikorian (Worcester, MA/Wachusett Regional HS) in the 35th minute. The Lasers tied it when a ball hit Lasell forward Kyle Cronin and bounced into the net with 26 seconds left in the first half.
Tholeman Francios untied it when he scored on a penalty kick 20 seconds after the second half had begun. Shane Vinnecombe converted a pass from Cronin in the 48th minute to finish the scoring.
"It was a very physical game," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Henry Almeida. "They tied it when we went to clear a ball out of our defensive zone and it hit one of their players and went in. Generally, we played well. We put pressure on them, but we couldn't convert our chances."
The Corsairs out shot the Lasers, 25-21. Freshman goalkeeper Kevin Pelsinski (Merrimack, NH/Merrimack HS) made four saves. Lasell starting goalkeeper Julian Dutton made nine saves, while Matthew Bruninghaus finished up the final 23 seconds without a save after Dutton was ejected.
UMD dropped to 7-8 with the defeat, while Lasell improved to 10-5 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Plymouth State Saturday.
