PLYMOUTH, NH--Sophomore midfielder Michael Alves (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS) scored twice and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's soccer team and host Plymouth State played a 2-2 overtime tie in a Little East Conference match at Panther Field Saturday.
Alves scored twice, each time tying the score before the teams battled through two scoreless overtime periods.
Alves scored on a 30-yard free kick with 29 minutes left in the first half to tie the score at 1-1. Dre Cabral had given the Panthers a 1-0 lead when he headed home a corner kick by Semir Mehmedovic 13 minutes into the match.
Adam Gove gave PSU a 2-1 lead with seven minutes remaining in the first half when his cross caromed in off a UMass Dartmouth defender. Alves tied it with 21 minutes remaining when he took a through ball from junior defender Ronnie Beaudoin (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS) and scored. Both teams had chances in overtime, but neither could score.
"It was a great game, well-played on both sides, and it was the right result," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Henry Almeida. "Both teams played well. Mike Alves had a great game for us, and he almost had the game-winner but their goalie made a great save at the end of regulation time. Ronnie Beaudoin, (freshman defender) Mike Dunleavy (Peabody, MA/Peabody HS), sophomore defender Matt Orsini (Dudley, MA/Dudley HS/UMass Lowell) and (senior defender) Jesse Vezina (Somerset, MA/Somerset HS) played exceptionally well in the back for us. We had a good effort, we just came up a little short."
The Panthers out shot the Corsairs, 21-12. UMD freshman goalkeeper Anel Brkic (Milton, MA/Milton HS) and PSU goalkeeper Tyler Shute each had five saves.
UMD is now 7-8-1 and 2-3-1 in the Little East Conference, while Plymouth State is 5-8-3 and 1-2-3. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Bridgewater State Tuesday evening.
