NEWTON, MA- Sophomore midfielder Bruno Araguo (Marlborough, MA/Marlborough HS) and senior midfielder Jarred Goldstein (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS/UMass Lowell) scored and The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's soccer team registered its second consecutive shutout, blanking host Mount Ida, 2-0, in a non-conference match at the Mount Ida Athletic Field Tuesday afternoon.
Araguo opened the scoring when he took a pass from sophomore midfielder Ebenezer Vicente (Praia, Cape Verde/Massasoit CC) and slid a shot into the corner in the 34th minute, Goldstein scored in a similar manner in the 65th minute, converting a pass from junior midfielder Mike Alves (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS).
"We played a very good game," said UMass Dartmouth Assistant Coach Frank Cunha. "Once we got that first goal, we took control, and then we scored again. They had a couple of chances and put some pressure on us, but we came up big and made the plays."
The Corsairs out shot the Mustangs, 28-13. Mount Ida goalkeeper Steven Enright made nine saves, while freshmen Mike Phelan (Carver, MA/Carver HS) and Jon Doucette (Boxford, MA/Masconomet HS), who split time for UMD, combined for two saves.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 2-0 with the victory while Mount Ida dropped to 0-3with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Fitchburg State Saturday.
