NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's soccer team scored once in each half and blanked visiting Salem State, 2-0, in a non-conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Wednesday.
Freshman forward Elton Borges (Praia, Cape Verde/Burke HS) staked the Corsairs to a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute when he ran down a shot by freshman defender Goncalo DeOliveira (Figueira da Foz, Portugal/New Bedford HS) and fired a shot past SSU junior goalkeeper Scott Hall (Waltham, MA/Waltham HS).
The Corsairs had a chance to increase their lead in the 34th minute when they were awarded a penalty kick after a foul in the penalty area. Sophomore defender Jonathan DaCosta (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) took the shot, but Hall dived to his left to make the save.
Freshman defender Jacinto Centeio (Boston, MA/Madison Park HS) doubled UMD's lead when he finished off a two-on-one break, converting a pass from junior midfielder Nelson Oliveira (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) in the 79th minute.
"It was a great win for us," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Henry Almeida. "We have really come together as a team early in the season. We played our best in the first half before we scored, then Salem took it to us and we were happy to be up 1-0 at halftime. Our young players are playing well and adapting to the system."
Salem State outshot UMass Dartmouth, 18-17. Junior goalkeeper Mike Phelan (Carver, MA/Carver HS) made eight saves and recorded his first shutout of the season, while Hall stopped five shots for the Vikings.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 3-1 with the victory, while Salem State dropped to 3-2 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Plymouth State Saturday. Salem State will visit Fitchburg State Saturday.
