NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's soccer team scored twice in the first half and went on to blank visiting Salem State, 2-0, in a non-conference match at Cressy Field Wednesday evening.
Senior midfielder Matt Correia (Dracut, MA/Dracut HS) broke a scoreless tie when he volleyed home a corner kick by senior midfielder Jarred Goldstein (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS/UMass Lowell) i9n the 23rd minute. Junior forward Giuliano Basile (East Longmeadow, MA/East Longmeadow HS) made it 2-0 when his shot bounced in off a defender in the 36th minute.
"You draw it up like this, and rarely does it happen," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Henry Almeida. "It was a well-executed game, and everyone did a great job wit the basics. It was great for Matt to get the first goal, he's one of our captains and he was injured last year. Giuliano's goal was pure grit, he's a workhorse and it really paid off for him."
The game marked UMD's third shutout in four matches this season. "We brought in three freshman goalkeepers, and they've all be splitting time, and we've only given up two goals in four games," said Almeida. "Any time you get a shutout, it's a credit to the defense and the goalkeepers."
The Corsairs out shot the Vikings, 18-12. Freshmen Kellen Rauch (Ashland, MA/Ashland HS) and Mike Phelan (Carver, MA/Carver HS) combined to make six saves for UMD, while junior goalkeeper Tom Morrison (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS) made six for SSC.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 4-0 with the victory, while Salem State dropped to 1-2 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Rhode Island College Saturday. The Vikings will host Massachusetts Maritime Saturday.
