Men's Soccer Shutout by Rhode Island College
Sept. 18, 2010
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's soccer team fell to visiting Rhode Island College, 3-0, in the 2010 Little East Conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Saturday.
The Anchormen out shot the Corsairs 16-6. Sophomore goalkeeper Mike Phelan (Carver, MA/Carver HS) made six saves for UMass Dartmouth, while junior goalkeeper Nic Clark (E. Bridgewater, MA/E. Bridgewater HS) recorded four for the Anchormen.
Rhode Island College was the first team to strike in the contest. With 7:41 left in the first half, senior midfielder Louis Tavares (E. Providence, RI/E. Providence HS) scored, off a pass by junior midfielder Hector Esildora Fortuno (Malaga, Spain/Lowell Catholic), giving the Anchormen a 2-1 advantage going into halftime. "We need to be more discipline and be aware of what's around us, with how [the game] is being called, and react accordingly, and we couldn't figure that out today," said Corsairs head coach Henry Almeida.
The Anchormen increased their lead when Fortuno blasted a direct kick opportunity, from 20 yards out, past Phelan, making it 2-0 with 12:02 remaining in the game. About 90 seconds later, Rhode Island College junior forward Bruno Costa (Pawtucket, RI/Tolman HS) put the game out of reach when he headed a bouncing ball past Phelan, securing the 3-0 victory for the Anchormen. "Two things were exposed today, our youth and our leadership issues, and hopefully we can get those both ironed out this week," said Almeida.
The Corsairs fell to 4-1-0 and 0-1-0 in the Little East Conference with the loss, while the Anchormen improved to 4-2-0 and 1-0-0 in the LEC with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit UMass Boston next Saturday. RIC will visit Bridgewater State Tuesday.
