BRISTOL, RI-Freshman forward Nick Gontijo (Hudson, MA/Hudson HS) scored a three-goal hat trick, including the tying and winning goals as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men’s soccer team came back from a 4-2 deficit to defeat host Roger Williams, 5-4 in double overtime, in their non-conference match at Bayside Field Tuesday.
Gontijo scored the tying goal with 2:09 left in regulation time, then scored the winner with 1:44 remaining in the second overtime.
Gontijo staked UMass Dartmouth to a 1-0 lead early in the first half, and freshman defender Goncalo DeOliveira (Figueira de Foz, Portugal/New Bedford HS) made it 2-0 with another first half goal. But the Hawks stormed back and tied the score before the first half ended, then took a 4-2 lead in the second half before sophomore defender Jonathan DaCosta (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) scored on a penalty kick to make it 4-3.
"I'm proud of everyone, we showed a lot of character," said UMass Dartmouth Assistant Coach Alex Bettencourt. "We fought back against a very good team. We made some mistakes, but we came back and capitalized on our opportunities on the road and scored five goals on the road against a good team."
UMass Dartmouth improved to 6-3-1 with the victory, while Roger Williams dropped to 9-1-2 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host UMass Boston Saturday.
