KEENE, NH-Sophomore midfielder Kyle Lopes (Somerset, MA/Somerset HS/Bristol CC) scored the only goal and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's soccer team turned in a strong defensive effort to blank host Keene State, 1-0, in a Little East Conference match at the Owl Athletic Complex Saturday afternoon.
Lopes picked up a loose ball after a Keene State turnover and fired a hard shot past Owl goalkeeper Peter Kersker in the seventh minute. Freshman goalkeeper Kellen Rauch (Ashland, MA/Ashland HS) and the Corsair defense did the rest, preserving the lead for the remainder of the match.
"Kyle Lopes scored on a great shot, and our defense was fantastic," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Henry Almeida. "Kellen did a great job, our defense, led by (senior) Ronnie Beaudoin (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS), was fantastic, and (junior defender) Andrew Eggleston (Belchertown, MA/Belchertown HS) marked their leading scorer for the whole game and did a great job. We went into a defensive shell for the last 15 minutes and kept them from scoring."
The Owls out shot the Corsairs, 8-7. Rauch made four saves for UMD to earn his first shutout of the season, while Kersker made three stops for the Owls.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 8-2-0 and 2-1-0 in Little East Conference play with the victory, while Keene State dropped to 7-5-0 and 3-1-0 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Tufts Tuesday evening.
