NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Visiting Massachusetts Maritime scored a pair of late goals and blanked the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's soccer team, 2-0, in a non-conference match at Cressy Field Thursday evening.
Sophomore forward Kevin McCord (Norwell, MA/Norwell HS) broke a scoreless tie when he corralled a loose ball in the penalty area and chipped it over Corsair freshman goalkeeper Mike Phelan (Carver, MA/Carver HS) with only 3:48 remaining. Sophomore forward Ryan Fischer (Marshfield, MA/Marshfield HS) made it 2-0 less than two minutes later when he took scored from short range. Junior forward Paul Mullis (Marshfield, MA/Marshfield HS) assisted on both goals.
"I give them all the credit in the world, they came out ready to play and we came out flat," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Henry Almeida. "We didn't score, we bent constantly without putting anything forward, and we broke at the end. They won every 50-50 ball. We have lost two games back-to-back where we could have dictated how the games went. We'll see what we've got for resolve on Saturday."
The Buccaneers out shot the Corsairs, 14-13. Phelan made six saves for UMD, while sophomore Taylor Wyman (Ponte Vedra Beach, FL/Duncan HS) made six for MMA.
UMass Dartmouth dropped to 8-4-0 with the defeat, while Mass Maritime improved to 5-6-1 with the victory. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Plymouth State Saturday afternoon. The Bucs will visit Fitchburg State Saturday.
