SALEM, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's soccer team and Southern Maine played to a 1-1, double overtime tie in a Little East Conference match at Salem State's Alumni Field Monday evening.
Junior forward Giuliano Basile (East Longmeadow, MA/East Longmeadow HS) put UMass Dartmouth on top when he scored unassisted in the 60th minute. Senior midfielder Peter McHugh (Scarborough, ME/Scarborough HS) tied the game for the Huskies when he converted a pass from junior midfielder Nick Johnson (South Portland, ME/South Portland HS) in the 75th minute.
"It was a typical game for us, I was pleased with our effort," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Henry Almeida. "We created a lot of chances, but we weren't able to finish. Giuliano scored a great goal, he went in on a breakaway, the goalie came out and he chipped it over him. They scored when the ball was bouncing in the box and we didn't clear it, and they just slid it by (freshman goalkeeper) Kellen (Rauch, Ashland, MA/Ashland HS). We got great midfield play from (sophomore) Kyle (Lopes, Somerset, MA/Somerset HS/Bristol CC), Jay (junior Jason Couto, Somerset, MA/Somerset HS/Bristol CC), and (senior) Jarred (Goldstein, Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS), a fantastic effort from Kellen, and a strong effort from our defense, led by (senior) Ronnie Beaudoin (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS).
The Huskies out shot the Corsairs, 16-13. Rauch made five saves for UMD, while junior David Kreps (Agawam, MA/Wilbraham and Monson HS) made two for USM.
UMass Dartmouth is now 8-5-1 and 2-2-1 in Little East Conference play, while Southern Maine is now 6-6-2 and 2-2-1. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Wheelock Wednesday afternoon. The Huskies will visit St. Joseph (ME) Wednesday.
