NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Freshman forwards Victor Ferreira (St. Miguel, Portugal/New Bedford HS) and Brenton Beaufils (Charlestown, MA/Charlestown HS) scored in the second half to give the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's soccer team a 2-0 victory over visiting Worcester State in a non-conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Wednesday.
Ferreira broke a scoreless tie when he scored unassisted at 66:48 Beaufils scored unassisted 20 minutes later to account for the final margin.
"It wasn't one our best performance, but we did enough to get the job done," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Henry Almeida. "We played much better in the second half than we did in the first half. It was good to see Victor and Brenton get on the score sheet, since they're our number one and number two scorers. At halftime, I told the guys that I didn't want this to be like the Emmanuel game, where we dominated and wound up in a tie."
The Corsairs outshot the Panthers, 15-5 Sophomore goalkeeper Mike Phelan (Carver, MA/Carver HS) made two saves for UMD, while senior Fred Groos (Floral Park, NY/Floral Park HS) made five for WSU.
The Corsairs improved to 8-3-2 with the victory, while the Lancers dropped to 3-11 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Eastern Connecticut State Saturday. Worcester State will host Salem State Saturday.
"We're in a tough position, where it could come down to the last game of the season, so we're going to take it one game at a time," said Almeida. "Our concern now is with Eastern Connecticut."
