BRIDGEWATER, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's soccer team scored early and host Bridgewater State scored late, resulting in a 1-1, double overtime tie in a non-conference match at Swenson Field Tuesday.
Junior midfielder Jason Couto (Somerset, MA/Somerset HS/Bristol CC) gave the Corsairs a 1-0 lead in the third minute when he fired home a 35-yard shot. Junior forward Giuliano Basile (East Longmeadow, MA/East Longmeadow HS) drew the assist. The Bears tied it when Simao Mendes scored on a penalty kick in the 83rd minute after the Corsairs were whistled for a foul inside the box.
"It was the same story, we played well, dictated the pace, but we just couldn't finish," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Henry Almeida. "Jay Couto scored an exceptional goal early in the game, our defense did a great job, and they got a late call and they tied it up. We created some opportunities, but we didn't take advantage of them."
The Bears out shot the Corsairs, 21-18. Freshman goalkeepers Jon Doucette (Boxford, MA/Masconomet HS) and Kellen Rauch (Ashland, MA) combined to make nine saves for UMD, while Ryan Seifert made 11 for BSC.
UMass Dartmouth is now 8-6-2, while Bridgewater State is now 8-4-3. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Western Connecticut State Saturday in the final match of the regular season.
