CAPE COD, MA-For the second time this week, a member of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's soccer team has earned a prestigious honor.
Junior goalkeeper Mike Phelan (Carver, MA/Carver HS) has been named Eastern College Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the NCAA Division III New England Region.
Phelan stopped all 16 shots he faced in two matches last week, shutting out Salem State, 2-0, and Plymouth State, 1-0. His backwards diving save in the final minute preserved UMD's victory against the Panthers.
"Mike's honor was very well-deserved," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Henry Almeida. "He had a great week, posting back-to-back shutouts while stepping into his role as the number one starter. Against Salem State, he was solid and consistent, and against Plymouth, he was unbelievable. We ask out goalkeepers to make easy saves, and occasionally great ones, and he made three great saves to help us earn the win."
The Corsairs are 5-1 and will return to action when they visit Western Connecticut State Friday.
