NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Sophomore midfielder Kyle Lopes (Somerset, MA/Somerset HS/Bristol CC) of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's soccer team has been honored by the Little East Conference.
Lopes has been named Little East Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
Lopes scored the game-winning goal in both of the Corsairs' matches last week. His free kick in the first sudden-death overtime was his second goal of the match and gave UMD a 2-1 victory over Lasell Tuesday. He scored the decisive goal in the 81st minute of a 3-2 LEC victory over UMass Boston Saturday.
"We're excited for Kyle," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Henry Almeida. "Initially, he was playing outside, and we moved him to the middle of the field, which was a better fit. He's been getting a lot more comfortable with our team and our system."
Lopes and fellow midfielder Jason Couto (Somerset, MA/Somerset HS/Bristol CC) are two of UMass Dartmouth's top scorers this season. "Jason and Kyle have played together since they were kids," said Lopes. "They won a state title together at Somerset High School, and did very well last year at BCC. Teaming them up here was the right move."
UMass Dartmouth is 5-1-0, 1-10 in LEC play, and will return to action Tuesday when they host Connecticut College.
