Francia First, Szarek Sixth in Three-Meter Diving Competition

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA- Sophomore Christian Francia (Hampton, NH/Winnacunnet HS) of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's swimming team won the three meter competition on the second and final day of action at the New England Division II and III Diving Championships at the Tripp Athletic Center Saturday.
Francia, who won the one-meter diving Saturday with a score of 384.90 points, won the three-meter competition with a score of 475.10 points and was named the Male Diver of the Meet. UMD sophomore Conor Szarek (Leominster, MA/Leominster HS), who finished seventh in the one meter competition Saturday with a score of 305.70 points, was sixth in three-meter diving Sunday with a score of 311.30 points.
"Both Conor and Christian dove exceptionally well this weekend," said UMass Dartmouth Diving Coach Danielle Morley. "I am very proud of the progress Conor has made this past year and was extremely happy with his seventh place finish on one meter and sixth place finish on three meter in his first year qualifying for the NEISDA Championships. Christian had the best three meter competition of his career. I was thrilled with his first place finish on one meter, and him defending his 3 three meter title from last year."
Kim Schmidt of Westfield State, who won both the one and three-meter diving competition, was named Female Diver of the Meet, and also won the Senior Diver High Point Award. Michael Walsh of Bentley won the Senior Male Diver Award.
The Corsair swimmers will return to action when they travel to the New England Division II and III Swimming Championships at White River Junction, VT next weekend.
