DAY 2: Corsairs Move Into 5th Place At NEISDA Championships

SOUTH KINGSTON, R.I.-- The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's teams competed in Day 2 of the 2014 New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving Championships this afternoon at Tootell Aquatic Center on the campus of the University of Rhode Island.

The evening session was cancelled due to an impending snow storm, so the timed finals highlighted the morning session.  The men's team moved into fifth place in the 12-team standings with 225 points.  Keene State College sits atop the men's team championship with 729 points.

Three members of the Corsairs men's team earned All-New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving honors, while the 200 medley relay team placed seventh overall. Junior Michael Gryss (New Bedford, Mass.) recorded an ECAC B Cut time in the 100-yard breastroke, touching the wall in eighth place with a time of one minute, 1.56 seconds.  Junior Ed Olean (Seekonk, Mass.) turned in the fifth lowest time in the 400 IM, hitting the wall at four minutes, 31.59 seconds.  Freshman Brian McCauley (Franklin, Mass.) posted the seventh best time in the 1,000-meter freestyle race (10:49.13).

The 200 medley relay quartet of freshman Bo Muir (Sagamore Beach, Mass.), junior Phil Lowney (Mattapoisett, Mass.), Gryss, and freshman Grayham Ronan (Millis, Mass.) combined to place seventh with a time of one minute, 43.88 seconds.

Lowney nearly earned All-NEISDA honors in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.19), placing one spot off the podium.  Muir covered the 100 backstroke in less than a minute (58.29) to place 11th overall.  Olean finished 12th in the 200 freestyle with a time of one minute, 54.91 seconds.

The 2014 New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving Championships will conclude on Sunday, Feb. 16.  The preliminary races are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., while the finals will commence at 5:30 p.m.  Fans unable to make the trip to South Kingston, can watch the live broadcast of Day 3 by clicking here.  Complete individual and team results will be available here.
